Starbucks signs Ethiopian coffee agreement
After a campaign that resulted in Starbucks receiving 96,000 petitions by e-mail, fax, phone and visits to coffee shops, the company is one of a number signing agreements recognising Ethiopia’s right to control the brands surrounding its coffee beans.
Oxfam says that this could bring millions more in annual revenues, in a country where about 15 million people depend on coffee to get by.

Movie challenges global coffee trade

Poster for Black Gold the movie

To all those with an interest in Fairtrade and Trade Justice – and coffee – we highly recommend this powerful film. Set in Ethiopia, USA and Britain, Black Gold is an investigation into, and indictment of, the global coffee trade and its effects on farmers’ lives. The film reveals the extent of the injustice the producers endure while the corporate coffee roasters reap huge profits. ‘Star’ of the film is Tadesse Meskela, whom many Fairtrade campaigners met in Cumbria in March 2005. His fight for a fairer price provides the film’s narrative.
Black Gold was shown at Theatre by the Lake in Keswick in June 2007 and provided an opportunity to link up with others interested in Fairtrade and Trade Justice.
