About Fairtrade Towns
To become a Fairtrade town or area you must meet the following five criteria:
1. The local council passes a resolution supporting Fairtrade and agrees to serve Fairtrade coffee and tea at its meetings and in its offices and canteens.
2. A range of Fairtrade products is readily available in the area's shops and local cafes/catering establishments.
3. Fairtrade products are used by a number of local work places and community organisations.
4. The town attracts media coverage and popular support for the campaign.
5. A local Fairtrade Steering Group is convened to ensure continued commitment to its Fairtrade Town status.

Local Information
Lakes Parish lies in the heart of the southern Lake District, and comprises the communities of Ambleside, Grasmere, Troutbeck, Rydal and Langdale. Some local shops, cafés and B&B's have been providing Fairtrade products to their customers for several years, and local churches have also been promoting Fairtrade.

Background
An informal group was set up in July 2003 to raise awareness of Fairtrade in the wider community, and the Ambleside Fairtrade Group was formally constituted in February 2004. The Fairtrade campaign was launched at a Fairtrade Day at the University College of St. Martin in March 2004, when local businesses and individuals were able to find out more about Fairtrade from displays, talks and stands set up by Fairtrade wholesalers.
The Group has run a successful Fairtrade stall at the Market Cross in Ambleside each year at the switch-on of Ambleside Christmas lights in November. Our first Fairtrade Directory was published in 2005.
Lakes Parish was awarded the status of Fairtrade Zone in April 2005, and the achievement was celebrated with a Fairtrade Cruise on Windermere, when certificates were presented to Lakes Parish and to Windermere & Bowness
